Located almost in the center of Japan, the Shimizu district of Shizuoka City (formerly Shimizu City) is known for its warm climate and beautiful scenery. In particular, the scenic spots Miho no Matsubara and Nihon-daira offer a beautiful view of Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan. The area is also blessed with seafood such as tuna, which is the number one catch in the country, and cherry shrimp and whitebait caught in Suruga Bay, as well as mountain produce such as tea, bamboo shoots, and mandarin oranges. In the New Year, you can also enjoy strawberry picking at Kuno Beach.

Miho area

Miho no Matsubara

Known as a scenic spot since the Heian period, Miho no Matsubara stretches across the southern side of the Miho Peninsula. With a total length of 7km and 56,000 pine trees, it is counted as one of Japan's five great pine groves, and the view of Mount Fuji, the highest peak in Japan, from the beach is sure to impress anyone.

Miho Shrine

Miho is known as the birthplace of the legend of the feathered robe. Miho Shrine preserves a fragment of the feathered robe of the heavenly maiden from the legend.

Around Nihon-daira

Nihondaira Yume Terrace

Located almost in the center of Shizuoka City, Nihon-daira is a hilly area 308 meters above sea level that has been designated as a national scenic spot and a prefectural natural park. On clear days, you can see the magnificent view of Mt. Fuji, Suruga Bay, the Izu Peninsula, and the Southern Alps. The night view is also beautiful in a way that is quite different from the daytime view.

Nihondaira Zoo

This is a municipal zoo located in Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City. It is home to many popular animals, including polar bears, lions, and red pandas, and is always bustling with visitors.

Kunozan Toshogu Shrine

Located at the summit of Mount Kuno, this is the first shrine in Japan dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. From the summit, you can see Suruga Bay, and the view is breathtaking. You can also access it from the Nihon-daira Ropeway. Be sure to take a look at the shrine building, which has been designated a national treasure.

Riverside Market

This market sells fresh seafood caught at Shimizu Port. The seafood, collected by the discerning eyes of wholesalers, is of high quality in both appearance and taste. Please stop by when you visit Shimizu.

Dream Ferry

The Suruga Bay Ferry connects Shimizu Port with Toi Port in Izu. It's directly connected to the boarding point from Shimizu Station. On the Shimizu Port Bay Cruise, you can enjoy a ferry cruise around Shimizu Port and explore the harbor.

Jirocho's birthplace

Located on Jirocho-dori Shopping Street is the birthplace of Shimizu Jirocho. Tools and documents that Jirocho used are on display, and the house itself remains as it was back then.

Around Shimizu Port

S-Pulse Dream Plaza

It is a facility filled with dreams and entertainment, including a large fresh produce market, Japan's first sushi theme park restaurant, a movie theater with the latest equipment, unique amusements, various restaurants, and general goods shops.

Shimizu Port Boathouse Memorial Hall [Suehiro]

This is a boathouse that Shimizu Jirocho opened at Shimizu Wharf. It is a valuable facility where you can learn about Shimizu Jirocho in his later years and the Shimizu Port of that time.

Verkehr Museum

This comprehensive "port museum" offers a glimpse into the origins and future of the port, a place of interaction between people and the sea. Ship models, ship-related items, and port work tools are on display, allowing visitors to learn about the history of Shimizu Port and the relationship between people and the sea.

Okitsu, Yui, and Kambara areas

Okitsuzagyoso

This is the villa where Prince Kinmochi Saionji spent his later years. The villa has been restored to its original appearance, allowing visitors to get a glimpse into the daily life of Prince Saionji.

Tokaido Hiroshige Museum of Art

This is the world's first museum to house and exhibit all the works of Utagawa Hiroshige, an Edo period ukiyo-e artist. Located within Yui Honjin Park, the Hiroshige Museum is divided into three thematic spaces: Yui's nature and history, Yui as a post town on the Tokaido road, and the world of Hiroshige's ukiyo-e.

Kambara Honjin Site

This is the site of the main inn of Kambara-juku, which served until the end of the Edo period. As it is a private residence, you cannot tour the interior, but you can get a sense of what it looked like back then from the exterior of the building.
